Die Emmys sind verliehen worden – nein, nicht die großen Emmys, die sind erst am 12. September 2022 dran. Eine Woche vorher werden seit einigen Jahren die kleinen Emmys vergeben, für die vielen kleinen, vielfach technischen Kategorien. Doch auch da lohnt sich ein Blick, weil das viele Serien betrifft, über die wir hier im Blog auch berichten. So gab’s für „Euphoria“ gleich mehrere Emmys für Editing, Make-up, Colman Domingo in der Nebenrolle und die herausragende Cinematography, auch „Atlanta“ wurde für die ausgezeichnete Cinematography in der Auftaktfolge der 3. Staffel ausgezeichnet (hatten wir hier im review ja auch schon gelobt). „Severance“ erhielt einen Emmy für das Outstanding Main Title Design, über das Maik hier auch schon berichtet hatte. Die Serie bekam außerdem einen Emmy für den Score. Und sogar die Marvel- und Star Wars-Universen sind mit Emmys bedacht worden, für „Moon Knight“ und „The Book of Boba Fett“. Für seine letzte Performance hat Chadwick Boseman in „What If…?“ einen Emmy für seine Stimme in “What If… T’Challa Became A Star-Lord?” erhalten. „Home Before Dark“ hat erwartungsgemäß einen Emmy für das Outstanding Motion Design bekommen. Und: Es gab einen Emmy für Barack Obama. In welcher Kategorie, findet Ihr in dieser Liste.

So sehr ich Nathan Lane und ONLY MURDERS auch mag, es drängt sich mal wieder die Frage „Wann ist eine Comedy eine Comedy?“ auf, wenn jemand einen Preis als Comedygaststar gewinnt, der nicht nur darin nur selten lustig sein durfte, sondern den Preis auch für die ernsteste Folge der ersten Staffel gewinnt.
Vielleicht drängt sich dir die Frage nur auf, weil du das zu eng siehst.
Der Preis wurde ihm für seine schauspielerische Leistung als Gast in einer Comedy-Serie verliehen (Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series), und nicht für seinen „Witz“. Nathan Lane erzeugt mit seinem Spiel eine bedrohliche Atmosphäre zu der das, leise, komödiantische Spiel von Steve Martin, Martin Short und Selena Gomez im Widerspruch steht. Dadurch entstehen absurde Situationen, in der Ernst und Heiterkeit dicht beieinander liegen, obwohl es keinen Grund dafür gibt. Besonders in der englischsprachigen Comedy wird sehr oft mit dieser „Fallhöhe“ gespielt. Daher fand ich Nathan Lane auch super besetzt und er wurde in meinen Augen für seine Leistung auch zu recht mit einem Preis gewürdigt.
Ich kann jedoch schon verstehen, dass heutzutage bei vielen Serien diese Schubladen-Genres nicht mehr einwandfrei funktionieren. Gerade der „Dramedy“-Bereich ist mittlerweile derart vielschichtig, dass man Formate eigentlich in beide Award-Kategorien packen könnte. „Only Murders“ ist mit seiner Mixtur ein Paradebeispiel der eierlegenden Wollmilchsau im Serienbereich.
Von der Tatsache, dass dieser Emmy an eine ernste Rolle in einer Comedy-Serie verliehen wurde auf die Frage zu kommen „Wann ist Comedy Comedy?“, ist in meinen Augen kein naheliegende Schlussfolgerung, und wirkt ein wenig wie mit der Brechstange in die Richtung einer kritischen persönlichen Haltung gegenüber zeitgenössischen Comedyformaten verbogen.
Ernsthaftigkeit macht Humor besser, nicht schlechter.
So sehr ich deine (und vermutlich im Grunde auch Holdens) kritische Haltung verstehe und teile, läßt sie sich für mich einfach nicht aus diesem verliehen Preis herleiten. Sorry.
Ich wollte damit auch gar nicht auf diesen verliehenen Preis eingehen, sondern lediglich auf den Aspekt der Genre-Unterscheidung, der meiner Meinung nach überholt ist. Comedy ist wie du sagst heute deutlich mehr als plump aneinandergereihte Gags, aber gerade dadurch schwer greifbar. Es gibt super-lustige Momente in den finster-ernstesten Serien und sehr ernste Momente in den lachhaftesten (im Bezug auf Comedy). Und das ist gut so.
Ups, dann war ich vermutlich auch schon bei Holdens Einwand „Lost in Interpretation“. Ich verstand es als eine Kritik an ausgezeichneten Rolle, dabei ging es wohl eher um eine Kritik an der Kategorisierung der Serie. Scusi für diese, nicht mehr auszuschließende Fehlinterpretation!
Ja, die „alten“ Kategorien funktionieren meiner Meinung nach auch nicht (mehr) wirklich. Ist die Frage, wie man da eine bessere Einteilung finden könnte. Oder Serienproduzenten müssen einfach wieder zum alten Schema zurückkehren. ;-)
